Hunting safari in Africa on the Moose auction list | Daily Democrat

Is going on a hunting safari in South Africa on your bucket list?

Believe it or not, this is one of the top items at the Fort Madison Moose Lodge auction on Saturday.

A 5-day hunting safari for up to six people at the Wilde Wildebeest Lodge in South Africa was offered at auction by Mike and Karen Helbing, worth around $15,000.

The winning bid will include a 5 night stay at the South Africa facility for 2-6 hunters; $1,000 in trophy fees; and all meals and beverages. The package does not include airfare or VAT.

The auction begins at 3 p.m. Saturday at Moose Lodge, 624 Ave. G, Fort Madison.

Other auction items include dining experiences, tickets to a Cubs vs. Cardinals game, tickets to an Iowa Hawkeye football game, and many other auction baskets and raffles.

Food will be available during the auction.

Mark Feagins, the administrator of Moose Lodge, said proceeds from the auction will go towards repairs and upgrades to the facilities.

“We lost our cold room last year. The damp crept in and the ceiling disappeared. We also have ceiling tiles that need to be replaced, but more importantly, we are still trying to come back from COVID,” he said.

He said there will also be several gas cards auctioned off.

“The way gas prices are right now, this should be a popular article.”

There is still time to donate an auction item. Simply drop off the item at the lodge or call 319-372-4351 to make arrangements.

Feagins said the clubhouse repair will allow the club to continue its community service and outreach. The club is heavily involved in the annual Charlie Korschgen 4th of July parade for children and regularly organizes fundraisers for groups such as the local pantry; the PAW no-kill animal shelter; the local chapter 2x4s for Hope which builds small houses for veterans; the Honor Flight that sends area veterans to war memorials in Washington, DC and more.

“Basically, if anyone needs fundraising, all they have to do is contact us,” Feagins added. “Fixing our club and making improvements allows us to continue to do these things.”

Upcoming fundraisers to help other LOCAL groups

In fact, on Friday, June 24, the day before the auction, the Moose will host a quiz night to raise money for Lee County Hospice; on July 1, the Lodge will host a musical evening at 7 p.m. to raise funds again for PAW; and on July 22, its members will host a fundraiser to help the Fort Madison Police Department’s K9 unit.
